Beware of the Latest E-ZPass Text Scam

Fraudsters are at it again, and this time, they’re targeting residents of Blue Earth County with a fake E-ZPass scam. Several people in our area have reported receiving text messages claiming that they have unpaid tolls. The message includes a link and instructions to make a payment to avoid penalties or legal action.

This is a SCAM.

Minnesota E-ZPass will never email or text you to request payment or personal information. If you receive a message like this:
Do not respond
Do not click any links
Do not provide any financial information
Delete the message and block the sender if possible

What to Do If You Clicked the Link or Provided Information

If you accidentally clicked the link or entered any personal information, take immediate steps to protect yourself:
Monitor your financial accounts for any unauthorized transactions.
Change passwords for your banking and email accounts if you suspect your information was compromised.
Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit file by contacting one of the major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion).

Reporting Fraud

While you don’t need to report receiving the message unless you’ve suffered financial loss, you can help authorities track fraudulent activity by reporting it to:
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center: https://www.ic3.gov/
The Federal Trade Commission: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/

Stay Vigilant

Scammers are always looking for new ways to trick people into handing over their hard-earned money. Be skeptical of unexpected messages asking for payment, and always verify directly with official sources before taking action.

At MVFCU, we’re committed to keeping our members informed and protected. Stay safe, stay aware, and spread the word to help others avoid falling victim to scams like this one!
